Approximate drive times from central Peters Township in normal traffic. Actual travel time varies by address, traffic, construction, weather and departure time.

Reach I-79 before connecting with Parkway West and the Fort Pitt Tunnel. This is often practical from western Peters Township

Travel east toward Library Road and Saw Mill Run Boulevard before approaching the Liberty Tunnel. This can be useful from eastern Peters Township or when Washington Road is congested.

Travel north to Cochran Road, continue toward Greentree Road and connect with Parkway West before entering the Fort Pitt Tunnel.

For Pittsburgh International Airport, take I-79 north to westbound PA Turnpike 576, the Southern Beltway. This tolled highway connects to the airport.

Park-and-ride access

Peters Township residents can access Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s light-rail system at South Hills Village. From there, the T travels through the South Hills and into Downtown Pittsburgh.

It can be a practical alternative for commuting, sporting events, concerts or days when you would rather avoid Downtown traffic and parking.

In Pittsburgh, the best route often depends on where you begin, when you leave and what is happening at the tunnels.

Your Address Changes the Route

Homes in different parts of Peters Township may favor Washington Road, Library Road, or the Parkway. The fastest option is not identical throughout the township.

The Tunnels Set the Driving Time

The Liberty and Fort Pitt Tunnels are important gateways into Pittsburgh. Rush hour, construction or an incident near either tunnel can change the drive considerably.

Flexibility Is the Advantage

Multiple driving corridors—and nearby access to the T—give residents flexibility. Pittsburgh is not a large city, and what locals call “traffic” may feel modest to someone relocating from a larger metropolitan area. Even so, tunnels, construction and the time of day can influence the best route.
