How Do Pittsburgh-Area High Schools Compare?

The 2026–27 U.S. News & World Report rankings provide one starting point for comparing public high schools throughout the Pittsburgh region.

This selected comparison highlights schools across the South Hills, North Hills and surrounding area. It is not a complete list, so gaps in the ranking numbers reflect schools not included in this table.

What Do School Rankings Measure?

U.S. News evaluates schools using six measures covering state assessment results, performance among underserved students, graduation rates, college readiness and college curriculum breadth. Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exam participation and performance contribute to the college-readiness measure.

These results offer one way to compare schools. They do not tell you everything about the classroom experience, student support or whether a particular program matches your student’s interests.

What Should I Compare Beyond Rankings?

Before narrowing your home search, consider the school experience that matters to your student.

• Academic opportunities: Course selections, advanced coursework, career exploration and learning support.
• Student services: Counseling, special education resources and support for students entering a new school.
• Activities: Music, theater, athletics, clubs and other interests.
• Daily logistics: Transportation, school start times, after-school care and travel between school, home and work.
• Enrollment: Required documents, registration timing and any separate application requirements for specialized programs.

How Do I Confirm Which Schools Serve a Home?

Start with the property’s complete street address. A mailing address, community name or ZIP code should not be your only basis for identifying its school district.

Ask the district to confirm the property’s assigned schools and enrollment requirements. If a particular school or program is important to your decision, verify that information before committing to a home.

For new construction, confirm the school assignment for the specific homesite rather than assuming every home in a development has the same assignment.

Should I Visit Schools Before Choosing a Home?

If possible, contact the district before your home-search trip. Ask whether school visits or meetings are available and what information can be provided for an incoming student.

Prepare questions about the programs, services and activities that matter most to you. It can also help to drive between prospective neighborhoods and the assigned schools while considering your work commute and after-school schedule.
